are regarded as the four most influential university rankings in the world 

As one of the most influential global university rankings,

Times has long been an essential university-selection tool for students and families,

making each year’s update a closely watched event.



THE’s assessment criteria cover five areas:
Teaching (learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); Citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); Industry income (knowledge transfer).


The weighting of each category is as follows:
Teaching (learning environment): 30%
  • Reputation survey: 15%
  • Student-to-staff ratio: 4.5%
  • Ratio of doctoral degrees awarded to bachelor’s degrees awarded: 2.25%
  • Ratio of doctoral degrees awarded to academic staff: 6%
  • Total university income: 2.25%


Research (volume, income and reputation): 30%
  • Reputation survey: 18%
  • Research income: 6%
  • Research productivity: 6%



Citations (research influence): 30%
Measured by the average number of times a university’s publications are cited by scholars worldwide.


International outlook (staff, students, research): 7.5%
  • Proportion of international students: 2.5%
  • Proportion of international staff: 2.5%
  • International co-authorship: 2.5%


Industry income (knowledge transfer): 2.5%




Topping the global rankings once again isOxford University, with three UK universities in the global top 10 and the remaining places taken by US institutions.

As was the case last year,37 Australian institutions participated in this year’s rankings,with 7 universities entering the global top 100 and 10 universities entering the global top 200.

The University of Melbourne continues to lead Australia at No. 1, ranked 34th globally this year,a drop of one place compared to last year.

Ranked 2nd in Australia isMonash University, globally ranked 44th, up 13 places from last year.

3rd in Australia isthe University of Queensland, ranked 53rd globally, up 1 place from last year.

4th in Australia isthe University of Sydney, ranked 54th globally, up 4 places from last year.

5th in Australia isthe Australian National University, ranked 62nd globally, down 8 places from last year.

6th in Australia isthe University of New South Wales, ranked 71st globally, down 1 place from last year.

7th in Australia isthe University of Adelaide, ranked 88th globally, up 23 places from last year.
