2022 State Government and Migration Assessment Bodies: Year-End Holiday Arrangements (Part 1) — Plus Newstars Office Closure Dates!

Another year is nearly over — are you ready for the holiday season?

The first full year of recovery after COVID has been a busy one,and Australian migration is no exception. Most assessment bodies are taking a standard break of around one week, pushing through to their last working week before Christmas,Below isNewstars’ annual year-end roundup,Some state governments and agencies have not yet responded,so here is Part 1 for now!

Federal

Department of Home Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs has publicly stated that it will observe public holidays and regular weekends only — the specific arrangements for individual processing officers are not disclosed.

In the second half of 2022, the Department has been racing to clear its visa processing backlog, with the publicly statedtarget of reducing the backlog from approximately 1,000,000 cases when the new minister took office to 600,000 by year end.According to the latest figures provided by the minister, the backlog had already fallen to 737,000 by the end of November, still around 140,000 short of the target,so visa officers will likely find it even harder to take leave this year-end than in previous years — with everyone watching closely.

State Government

ACT (Canberra)

The ACT Government has advised that its standard closure dates align with public holidays, and current nomination processing times remain approximately three weeks.

PS. The official website also mentions that a matrix invitation round will be issued on 25 December — watch this space.

State Government

Tasmania

The office will be closed from 25 December 2022 to 1 January 2023

(24 December falls on a Saturday, and 2 January is a public holiday, so no work is expected on those days either)

Tasmania is currently finalising the setup of its new gateway system, having previously committed to going live in December — again, watch this space.
