So for students who have just graduated or are still studying in Australia and want to migrate through the 189 pathway — what steps do you need to go through?

Step 1

Complete Your Skills Assessment

We often get questions from students such as:
“I’m studying IT in New South Wales — can I migrate through the 189 using an IT occupation?”

“I graduated in Accounting — can I use Accounting to migrate?”

To find out which occupations are eligible for migration, you can search the Department of Home Affairs occupation list on their official website:

https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skill-occupation-list

The example below usesAccountingas an illustration:

Each occupation has clearly specified visa types available for application. As long as your occupation is on the list, there is a pathway to migration.For the Subclass 189 specifically, only occupations on Australia’sMedium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)are eligible for the 189 pathway.

It is worth noting that, strictly speaking, Australia does not have “migration majors” —what exists are “migration occupations”— what does that mean?

To use Accounting as an example again: a graduate with a Master of Accounting from the University of Sydney has studied accounting as their academic major. If they wish to use that qualification to migrate to Australia, the vast majority of mainstream skilled migration pathways require a successful skills assessment in the Accounting occupation — simply completing the degree and graduating is not sufficient on its own.

That is whya Skills Assessment is the bridge between your academic major and your migration occupation.In other words,holding a skills assessment is a prerequisite for the Subclass 189 and for many other points-tested skilled migration pathways such as the Subclass 190 and 491 state nomination streams.

There are three broad categories of skills assessment pathways in Australia:

1. [Qualifications + Language] Skills Assessment:For example, the Accounting skills assessment can be completed by finishing the required courses and achieving the necessary language scores.
2. [Qualifications + Work Experience or Professional Year]Skills Assessment: For example, IT and Engineering occupations can complete their skills assessment through a highly relevant academic programme combined with a Professional Year (PY) or relevant work experience.
3. [Work Experience] Skills Assessment:For instance, increasingly popular occupations such as Marketing Specialist, Financial Broker and Investment Adviser — these do not require a relevant qualification; work experience alone is sufficient to complete the skills assessment.

Step 2

Submit Your EOI

EOI stands for Expression of Interest — it is the formal declaration of intent to apply for skilled migration and is the prerequisite step before a Subclass 189 visa application.

As you may know, the Subclass 189 is a points-based skilled independent migration pathway. When you submit your EOI and complete your personal details, the system will automatically calculate your migration points score based on the information you provide.

You can also use the following points table to estimate your score in advance.

Please note thatthese points items are not permanently valid.For example,a Skills Assessmentis valid for 2–3 years in most cases; the language test score recognised by the Department of Home Affairs is only valid for 3 years;the Professional Year (PY)counts from the start date of the Professional Year and is only valid for 48 months — it cannot be renewed or repeated after expiry;NAATI Community Language,is valid for 3 years, but the certification can be renewed after expiry; …

Many recently invited applicants have encountered issues with expired documents. If any of your points items have expired, please contact us as soon as possible so we can explore whether there are any remedies available.

Step 3

Lodge Your Visa Application

Once you receive your EOI invitation, you can proceed to lodge your permanent residency visa application.

There are two key points to note here:

First,if you receive a Subclass 189 EOI invitation, you must prepare all required documents and submit your application within 60 days.

Second, if you receive a Subclass 190 EOI invitation, before lodging your final PR visa application you must also submit your state nomination (Nomination) to the relevant state within 14 days of receiving the EOI invitation, and then complete your visa application within 60 days of the nomination being approved.
