Big News! IT, Engineering, Healthcare and More Could Soon Get a Longer Subclass 485 — At Least 4 Years!

Back in October last year, the Australian Government confirmed that graduates in certain fields would be eligible for longer Subclass 485 Graduate Work visas. At the time, the confirmed changes (for the initial grant) were:
Bachelor’s graduates: from 2 years to 4 years
Master’s graduates: from 3 years to 5 years
All doctoral graduates: from 4 years to 6 years

This policy was confirmed for implementation — the remaining questions were:which fields of study? And when would it take effect?

Today, the Federal Government has given us the answers!

According to the document, eligible fields were selected primarily on the basis of labour market demand, drawing on occupations listed with strong and moderate demand in the 2022 Skills Priority List.

In addition to healthcare occupations, the list includes a large number of engineering and IT occupations. “S” indicates demand across Australia, while “R” indicates demand primarily in regional areas.
See the full occupation table below

The effective date of the new policy has been confirmed as1 July 2023. Before that date, the Governmentwill release the specific CRICOS course codes for eligible programmes.

The qualifications corresponding to each eligible field have now been released

For ICT, for example:

For Engineering, for example:

In addition, the list will be reviewed annually, so it is not entirely fixed. The exact cut-off criteria still need to be determined through specific legislation. If you have already lodged a Subclass 485 application and it has not yet been granted, there may be an opportunity to benefit (after all, the previous extension from 2 years to 3 years for master’s graduates was also applied retrospectively). If you lodge your Subclass 485 on or after 1 July, this new policy is for you!

On a related note, with the visa renewal season approaching around 15 March, if your student visa, Subclass 485, or other visa is expiring soon, please remember to make arrangements well in advance — feel free to get in touch!Of course, the door to Australian higher education has opened even wider — graduates will have more time and opportunity to prepare for migration and employment! We also welcome enquiries about studying in Australia!
