Are you already picturing your parents flying down to enjoy a stretch of holiday in Australia, spending quality time with you and soaking up that warm family feeling? Today, the Newstarsec team will walk you through the details of the long-stay parent visitor visa. One important reminder: if your child is an Australian citizen or permanent resident but is still a minor, these arrangements do not apply to their non-Australian parents.
Depending on the circumstances of each application, the case officer may consider issuing a multiple-entry visa with a maximum stay of up to 12 months per visit, valid for up to:
1. Five years
For parents who are outside Australia, have lodged a parent migration visa application, and are already in the queue awaiting processing.
2. Three years
1. Have previously been granted an Australian visa and complied with its conditions.
2. Have not lodged a parent migration visa application.
3. Or have lodged a parent migration application but are not yet in the processing queue.
3. Eighteen months
1. Have never previously visited Australia.
2. Have not lodged a parent migration visa application.
3. Or have lodged a parent migration application but are not yet in the processing queue.
Please note: these longer-validity visas:
1. Do not apply to applicants who only need a stay of less than 12 months.
2. Do not apply to applicants lodging from inside Australia.
3. Will carry visa condition 8503, meaning the applicant cannot apply for a new visa while in Australia. This condition may be waived in rare circumstances.

In addition to meeting all other visitor visa requirements, applicants will also need to:
1. Clearly state on the application form that they are seeking a longer-validity visa (with a 12-month stay).
2. Undergo a medical examination.
3. Hold health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia.
4. Undertake that, within any 18-month period, they will not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in total. Like all other visitor visa holders, the visa holder must spend a certain amount of time outside Australia after each visit before returning. The visa will carry condition 8558, which limits cumulative stay to no more than 12 months in any 18-month period. Failure to comply may result in the visa being cancelled.
