Another state lowers its bar and welcomes offshore applicants! New relative-sponsored pathway, ultra-low work experience requirement, many occupations eligible!

Yesterday, we saw yet another state nomination programme lower its bar for offshore applicants! This time it’s the less familiar Northern Territory (NT). Eight months into this financial year, NT still has 938 Subclass 491 places remaining, with a usage rate of only 33%, and 412 Subclass 190 places remaining.

For offshore applicants, NT had previously confirmed that it mainly issues Subclass 491 invitations to offshore applicants, and only considers issuing Subclass 190 in a small number of cases

So with 4 months left in the financial year, and Subclass 491 places still in plentiful supply, the state government has decisively moved to lower the application bar and expand its pathways to attract more offshore applicants!

What’s changed

Lower bar · More pathways · More occupations

1. The minimum relevant work experience requirement has dropped from 3 years to 1 year (unless an individual occupation has specific requirements)

2. More occupations can apply through the Priority Occupation pathway

3. A new regional-category relative pathway has been established

NT state nomination for offshore applicants

Basic requirements

– English at a minimum of four 6s (PTE accepted)
– EOI score of 65 points
– Settled overseas
– Hold a positive skills assessment
– At least one year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation

In most cases, the state government issues Subclass 491 invitations to offshore applicants

Three pathways for NT offshore applicants

Next, let’s look at the three application pathways NT has prepared for offshore applicants

Pathway One – Priority Occupation pathway
– The occupation is on the Northern Territory Offshore Migration Occupation List
and you hold the corresponding skills assessment
Some occupations must meet additional work requirements (marked * below)
Occupations eligible for this pathway
-*Accountant (General)

-Graphic Designer/*Marketing Specialist
-*Interpreter/Vocational Education Teacher

and many more

Pathway Two – Regional-category relative pathway requirements
This pathway has no occupation restrictions – any occupation on the federal occupation list is eligible to apply
– Evidence of genuine efforts to find work in NT
The primary or secondary applicant has an eligible relative who holds a Subclass 491/494/489 visa, or has lodged and transitioned to 887/191 and is at the bridging-visa stage, and has been settled in NT for at least 12 months
Eligible relatives are:

Pathway Three – Job offer pathway requirements
– Any occupation on the federal occupation list is eligible to apply
– A job offer in the nominated occupation in NT, with the employer having operated for at least 12 months

For most applicants, we believe the Priority Occupation pathway is the first choice – it covers a wide range of common occupations, and opportunities are everywhere when you take a closer look at lodgement time!Get in touch with our consultants below to arrange a complete plan from skills assessment to state nomination lodgement and on to your visa!
