USYD Fisher Rebuild Update: July Completion Expected!

USYD’s Fisher Library updated the progress of its rooftop terrace redevelopment on Instagram yesterday. The library says that, if the works go smoothly, completion is expected in June–July this year, and they’ll keep everyone posted!

A few months ago USYD announced that it would reopen the Fisher Library rooftop terrace to students, staff and other library users — the first time the Fisher rooftop area has been opened to the public in more than 30 years.

The renovation includes repairs to the roof, plus the installation of ramp access, shading, outdoor amenities and planting. The renovated terrace will be accessible from the fifth floor of the Fisher Library.

This rooftop terrace overlooks the whole USYD campus and the city, and it was already part of the design when the Fisher Library opened to the public in 1963. Later, however, because the rooftop space did not comply with Australian building and safety regulations, access to the terrace was restricted, and it was closed for more than 30 years — right up until now.

USYD Strikes Again This Friday & Next Wednesday!

At today’s branch members’ meeting, the University of Sydney branch of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) voted to strike again this Friday, 31 March, and next Wednesday.

On strike days, plan your study schedule too — if you can avoid going to campus, study from home as much as possible.

In 2022 the NTEU held six days of strike action. This year’s first strike was on the Thursday of Week 3, when the union held a 24-hour stoppage. At the time the union also made its position clear: if university management did not meet the union’s demands, then, on top of the next round of strikes coming up,there would be a 72-hour strike in Week 10.

In other words, after the second round of strikes, if the two sides still haven’t reached an agreement, everyone can expect to see another strike in Week 10.
