State Nomination Opens Up for IT Occupations! Multiple Invitations at 55–65 Points Before Bonuses — Onshore and Offshore — Plus Ultra-Low Scores for Marketing, Organisation, Finance and More

There was a lot of state-nomination news yesterday, and NSW 491got a bit buried in it all. After pulling it together, we found that NSW 491 has opened the floodgates yet again!

Summary of the NSW 491 invitation round on 12 April 2023

This round invited a great many computing occupations

1. Invitations were issued from as low as 55 points (before any nomination bonus), mostly to offshore applicants — and among those offshore applicants, quite a few graduated from Australian universities, returned home for a few years, and have now chosen to start afresh.

2. Computing occupations are fairly competitive for Subclass 190 across every state-nomination stream, with scores needing to be 80 or higher. What makes it even tougher is that Victoria and NSW have rarely issued IT invitations in recent rounds. If you are offshore, or for other reasons your points simply will not climb any higher, the 491 is well worth considering.

Niche occupations remain NSW favourites

1. Niche occupations such as organisation, marketing and finance remain NSW favourites this financial year.

2. Most applicants in these occupations are offshore, and as we head towards the end of the financial year the competition has become fiercer. To secure a 190 invitation, your points and work experience need to stand out.If you cannot keep up with the competition, consider the 491 — the score required is lower; you only need to reach 50 points on your own, which really is the lowest of the low.

Audit and engineering — steady as ever

1. Some external auditors were invited at 80 points before any nomination bonus — a score not far off the 190.

2. Engineering invitations also continue to be issued steadily, occupations like civil and mechanical engineering are ones NSW routinely invites, with invitations issued at 50 or 55 points before any bonus — a genuinely generous offer.

The state government keeps the invitations coming, scooping up large numbers of offshore applicants

1. Roughly two-thirds of invitations may have come through Pathway 2, and the remaining invitations this financial year will also be concentrated in this stream.

2. Some applicants who lodged through the RDA stream before the deadline may also receive invitations, provided that RDA still has quota remaining. If you have lodged and not yet heard back, you can wait a little longer.

The NSW 491 Pathway 2 (state stream) occupation list is as follows
The occupations it covers are essentially as comprehensive as the 190 list!

NSW 491 — the final three months will be a sweet opportunity!

Several state nominations adjusted their quotas yesterday. Generally, quota top-ups and adjustments are first requested by the state government and then approved by the federal government. This includes Victoria, which could not use up its 491 quota and moved it across to top up the 190. In fact, NSW has even more 491 quota, and its 190 is even more “undersupplied”, yet NSW has not requested to use 491 quota to top up the 190. This also signals NSW’s support for, and confidence in, the 491 programme.

If you still do not know about an excellent stream like the NSW 491, it is not too late to start learning about it now — skills assessment → English → lodgement → invitation: act quickly and it is entirely possible to land your outcome within this financial year!

NSW 190

has also begun processing the batch of applicants who received pre-invitations on 5 April

NSW 190 still has quota to release, but not the large surplus that the 491 has. From here, it should focus more on those occupations NSW favours.
Summary of the 5 April invitation round

NSW 190 may be the most popular stream after the 189. If you are confident competing, if you are willing to wait, and if you aspire to live in Australia’s largest city, Sydney, you are most welcome to come in for an assessment and consider the NSW 190.
