The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is one of Australia’s largest and most prestigious engineering faculties. As the largest engineering faculty in Australia, in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) the UNSW Faculty of Engineering ranked first in Australia in the fields of engineering/mechanical engineering and instrument science and technology.

Duration: 2 years

Academic requirements: A 4-year non-accredited (under the Washington Accord) bachelor’s degree in engineering (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline, with an average mark of at least 65%; or a 3-year bachelor of engineering science in a cognate discipline, equivalent to at least the average mark of at least 75% over the first three years of a Washington Accord-accredited engineering degree.

English requirements: IELTS 6.5 (6.0) equivalent

Tuition fees: $47,740/year

Programme structure: This programme requires a total of 96 credit points

The University of Queensland — Psychology

With the 2023 psychology rankings now released, the University of Queensland’s psychology programme is ranked 30th in the world. This 2-year full-time programme will give students the core professional skills and knowledge needed to practise competently as a psychologist. Students can choose to specialise in counselling psychology, health psychology, or sport and exercise psychology. By completing the programme they develop core professional competencies, including skills in counselling, behaviour change and psychological assessment. Students undertake 1,000 hours of supervised clinical placement across a range of organisations, including community services, government, hospitals, healthcare providers and private practices. The programme is also recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia and holds full accreditation from the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. It’s worth noting that this field can command an annual salary of $67,000–$83,000, with an average of $75,000 per year.

Programme name: Master of Psychology

Duration: 2 years

Academic requirements: An approved 4-year bachelor’s degree in psychology (Honours I or IIA) or an equivalent 4-year APAC-accredited programme. Applicants must be eligible for provisional registration — or full registration where applicable — with the Psychology Board of Australia. Applicants holding a non-Australian degree must have their qualifications assessed by the APS.

Chinese non-211 universities require an average mark of 87

English requirements: IELTS overall 7 (7.0) or equivalent

Monash University — IT

Monash University is the only one of Australia’s Group of Eight to have a dedicated IT faculty, and ranks among the world’s top 50 universities for IT. Monash University’s IT programmes aim to develop highly capable IT professionals, with a curriculum spanning multiple specialist areas such as computer science, computer engineering and software development — areas where the IT industry faces a significant talent shortage. The programme also emphasises practical, hands-on teaching, integrating the strengths of computer science, computer engineering, electronic engineering and other disciplines, with the goal of developing students’ real-world application skills so they are better prepared for their future careers.

Programme name: Master of Information Technology

Duration: 1.5/2 years

Intake: February/July

Academic requirements: The 2-year option requires no specific related undergraduate background, with an average mark of at least 60%; the 1.5-year option requires a related undergraduate background, including completed study in programming, databases, algorithms and data structures, data communications and systems analysis in computing or computer science, with an average mark of at least 60%.

English requirements: 6.5 (6.0) or equivalent

The University of Western Australia — Mining

When it comes to Western Australia, everyone knows that the state is best known for its mining. In Australia, WA is a major mining powerhouse — so studying mining in WA is a genuinely promising choice!

The University of Western Australia’s engineering programme is a professionally accredited engineering degree, designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate engineering degree. The programme focuses on the engineering plan, with students undertaking advanced engineering technology units, professional units, and design and research projects, along with an 8- to 12-week professional placement. Mining sits within UWA’s engineering faculty, which also offers fields such as biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering.

Academic requirements: A 4-year engineering degree from a recognised institution, relevant to mining, is required. Students from a non-mining background may take different prerequisite units offered by the university based on their original course.
