A Record High! Subclass 189 Issued Over 66,000 Invitations This Financial Year — 7,353 on 25 May! Points-Based Skilled Migration Heads for 130,000 Invitations!

On 25 May, Subclass 189 issued what is almost certainly the final invitation round of this financial year. The number of invitations we saw on the day was not small, but they were limited to occupations in extremely short supply.

Today, the Department of Home Affairs released the official figures for the 25 May round:

Volume —

Subclass 189 issued 7,353 invitations,and the family-sponsored Subclass 491 issued 74.

Occupations and points —
For most occupations, whether onshore or offshore, 65 points was enough to be invited;a small number were invited at 70 points or higher, and those occupations were allin medicine and nursing —medicine, nursing, social work and teachingrelated fields.

This round looks more like the Department clearing its quota. Among our own clients, many applicants had already been invited through the state-nominated pathways, and some had even been granted their visas.

There is, however, one figure worth noting. With the release of the volume for this financial year’s (most likely) final Subclass 189 round,we now also knowjust how extraordinary points-based skilled migration was in the 2022–23 financial year, and how many opportunities it opened up!
Total Subclass 189 invitations: 66,535
Subclass 491 family-sponsored invitations: 1,507
Subclass 190 state-nomination places*: 38,133
Subclass 491 state-nomination places*: 24,283
A total of 130,458 invitations!

*As at the end of April, the overall usage rate of state-nomination places was close to 80%,so even on a conservative estimate of actual issuances, that still works out to 125,000 invitations!

This is comfortably a record high, and that is before counting employer sponsorship, which gathers pace later in the year, and without including the GTI~

As we wrap up, do not assume this financial year is over —a number of state-nomination pathways and employer-sponsored programmes are still issuing invitations and still processing cases. For details, see:In the final month of the financial year, these Subclass 190/491 pathways are still open and still working hard to issue invitations — covering all the familiar occupations such as accounting, engineering and IT!

Congratulations to everyone who landed PR this financial year
