Will Invitation Scores Rise in the New Financial Year? With No 190/491 Quotas and No State-Nomination Policy Yet, Now Is the Time to Get Your Skills Assessment Ready!

Because the federal government has not yet allocated formal quotas, the 23-24 financial-year state-nomination invitations remain on hold across every state except Tasmania (for the latest full roundup, see: Update! Some state nominations reopening? Some still under assessment? A roundup of every state’s official 23-24 new financial-year updates!

Australia’s three most popular and lowest-barrier skilled migration categories — Subclass 189, Subclass 491 and Subclass 190 — have drawn plenty of attention after a full financial year of momentum building.

Overall, invitation activity in the 23-24 financial year is unlikely to be much worse than in 22-23, but a larger-scale breakthrough (a loosening of the rules) is also unlikely. For popular pathways such as New South Wales and Victoria, with both invitation numbers and policy staying steady, more applicants simply means more competition.

In fact, the signs were already there with NSW Subclass 190 late in the 22-23 financial year: after roughly a full year of attention, newly popular occupations such as marketing and finance saw their scores climb by 5-10 points. For occupations like accounting and computing, where the applicant pool is enormous both offshore and within Australia, scores in the popular pathways are very unlikely to drop sharply.

That’s why we keep stressing: get into the pool early in the financial year while quotas are still plentiful — being among the first to take the plunge gives you a far better chance of receiving an invitation with a lower score

Holding a skills assessment, four 6s in English and at least 65 points on the EOI are the most basic conditions for entering the pool.

Your skills assessment and your four 6s in English can be prepared at the same time. While we assess your skills assessment, we can also calculate your EOI points — get in touch if you need a hand!

Skills assessments for computing occupations take 3-4 months, while a VET priority assessment can be completed within 10 business days — but qualifications obtained in China must first be verified, which can add some delay. So once again: while state nomination is on pause and there’s still no news on Subclass 189, make the most of this window to get your skills assessment ready.
