由澳洲最顶级的8所研究性大学组成，每年花费60亿澳元用于学术研究，其中20亿用于医疗和卫生服务研究。在2017年QS排名上，这8所大学在生物科学、医药、地质科学、环境科学、会计和金融、以及教育等专业都进入世界100强。8所大学教育了澳洲超过一半以上的医疗、牙科、兽医专业的学生。
